In working with this group of “twenty-somethings,” I was reminded of the incredible talent, passion, energy, and resourcefulness college students bring to the table. Unfortunately, nonprofit organizations often times miss the opportunity to engage young people in meaningful volunteer opportunities or leadership roles for fear of their abilities or lack of ideas on how to work with them. ..

With the help of stimulus dollars, a personal income tax surcharge on New Yorkers making over $250,000, and new income tax reforms, that $20 billion budget gap has been reduced to a little over $1.5 million. However, the ongoing weak economy, in addition to the slow recovery, continues to undermine New York State’s efforts to restore those cuts.  By Mohan Sikka - An intriguing finding of the latest Daring to Lead study is that non-profit executives rate "non-didactic" professional development strategies very highly. The highest rated activities are "Executive Coaching" and "Peer Networks", which are predominantly non-didactic. The next highest rated activity was "Leadership Development Programs". When well-designed like our Leadership Caucus, this also includes multiple non-didactic elements. ..

Free Services for CBOs During Hard Times

by Holly Delany Cole - When Community Resource Exchange was established 30 years ago, its initial aim was to create a ‘space’ where nonprofits could assist one another directly, create support networks and share tools, templates and strategies for getting greater community outcomes.  CRE eventually became an intermediary whose staff partners with nonprofits to identify and solve institutional concerns and provides them with information and other resources, but we’ve never lost sight of our fundamental interest in promoting productive direct exchanges between and among nonprofits. ..
