Successful Nonprofit Merger in NYC

Sometimes it doesn’t take much assistance to help a group make a dramatic and successful step to preserve their programs. High 5 Tickets for the Arts came to CRE with a clear picture of their difficult financial situation and belief that their program was worth preserving. However, the Board was not sure how to move forward on developing a partnership.

CRE provided the Board of Directors the opportunity to articulate what High 5 wanted from a partnership, to develop criteria to assess potential partners and to identify the assets they bring to a partner. Shortly after our work with High 5, they identified Arts Connection as an appropriate merger partner.

Mergers are one end of the collaboration/partnering spectrum. Other organizations may choose to collaborate on programming or development partnerships, for example, with one organization providing programming for younger children and another for middle school and high school students in a particular geographic area. Nonprofits may be able to share space and/or combine back office operations. For information about any of these topics, call the CRE’s Advice Line at 917-344-6678.
