CRE Search -- Director of Development -- Chinese-American Planning Council

The Chinese-American Planning Council has re-opened their search for a Director of Development.  Working in close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board, the Director of Development will be responsible for designing and implementing a fundraising plan to position the organization to appeal to a broad range of funders and ultimately diversify the organization’s funding base. S/he will plan, organize, and direct all fundraising strategies for the organization including raising money from foundations, corporations and individual donors.

The Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC) was founded in 1965 as a New York based grassroots organization to help a growing community of Chinese immigrants adjust to a new life in America. As CPC enters its fifth decade of service, the organization has experienced tremendous growth and expansion. CPC is now one of the nation’s largest Asian-led organizations, providing social services and serving close to 8,000 New Yorkers daily through its 29 locations. Position Summary

Working in close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Board, the Director of Development will be responsible for designing and implementing a fundraising plan to position the organization to appeal to a broad range of funders and ultimately diversify the organization’s funding base. S/he will plan, organize, and direct all fundraising strategies for the organization including raising money from foundations, corporations and individual donors.

 

The Director of Development will provide guidance and supervision to the staff currently responsible for the planning and execution of special events.  S/he will take the lead in developing strategies to expand the success and revenues generated from the organization’s two existing events and will devise donor cultivation strategies.

 

The Director of Development will have vision and entrepreneurial energy, as well as a natural ability to build and expand donor relationships. S/he will bring a hands-on approach combined with the ability to supervise others, and the capacity to lead and be part of a team. S/he will establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, and will appropriately leverage the knowledge, experience and expertise of all CPC’s stakeholders to achieve the development goals of the organization.


Primary Responsibilities

The Development Director at CPC:

Plans Development Strategies

  • Collaborates with the Board of Directors and Executive Director to create and implement an annual development plan
  • Evaluates all fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved
  • Reviews and advises Program directors on available, appropriate government RFP’s and when necessary assists in the coordination of responses to RFP’s
  • Monitors fundraising trends and adapts fundraising strategies as necessary

 Organizes Development Activities

  • Develops and manages a fundraising calendar to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner
  • Works closely with CPC program and fiscal staff to prepare and submit grant applications  and reports
  • Oversees the planning and execution of special fundraising events by working closely with the special events manager and the Board’s benefit committee
  • Identifies, develops and cultivates corporate, community and individual prospects
  • Oversees the administration of a donor mailing list and database which respects the privacy and confidentiality of donor information
  • Coordinates in-kind donations

 Manages the Development Budget

  • Works in collaboration with CPC’s fiscal team to develop and gain approval for an annual income and expenditure budget for the development department
  • Prepares/ monitors the preparation of grant reports, budgets, receipts and expenditures related to fundraising and the management of the development activities
  • Works in collaboration with CPC’s fiscal team and senior management to develop budgets for proposals and grants, identify funding gaps and to establish fundraising goals

 Manages the Development Team

  • In consultation with the Executive Director, recruits and manages well-qualified development staff
  • Provides guidance and supervision to the Special Events Manager/Executive Assistant in the planning and execution of organization-wide fundraising and special events

 Promotes the Organization

  • Collaborates with the Board to develop a comprehensive communication plan to promote the organization to its donors and funders
  • Oversees the design, printing and distribution of marketing and communication materials for development efforts including its dissemination through CPC’s website
  • Builds relationships with community stakeholders to advance the mission and fundraising goals of the organization
  • Senior level management experience in the nonprofit sector with at least 5 years of experience in fundraising
  • Proven fundraising track record with particular emphasis on fundraising strategies that have increased support from major donors, corporations and foundations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with varied constituencies, including Board members, staff, prospective donors and institutional funders
  • Working knowledge of New York City’s philanthropic, social and government  organizational leadership
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; persuasive communicator with a keen eye for detail
  • Marketing experience a plus
  • Bachelor's degree required (Master's degree preferred)

Salary:  Commensurate with experience
