On a day when most people are enjoying a holiday, City Council Member James Sanders, Jr. gathered nonprofit leaders in District 31 in Queens (Laurelton, Springfield Gardens, Rosedale and the Rockaways) to network and receive training on nonprofit management. Topics included starting a nonprofit, fundraising, planning and budgeting. CRE consultant Arnaldo Simo led a session on Contingency Planning and Budgeting for nonprofits with budgets of $1 million and greater.
Because of a rise in gang violence in the Rockaways, Councilman Sanders is seeking to follow this meeting with Anti-Violence Initiative. He would like to convene a mix of nonprofits, faith-based organizations, community residents and even gang members to understand how to best respond to this troubling issue. CRE hopes to play a part in the facilitation and documentation of this important organizational meeting.
This is a role CRE has played many times in communities across New York City. We help to organize “town hall” style meetings which are designed to facilitate information exchange among individuals and groups. CRE carefully documents the meetings, and works with the organizers to develop concrete action plans for the ad hoc coalitions to work on. Many of these naturally occurring networks have gone on to become nonprofits themselves.
CRE plans to do more community-based work than ever before in 2010 as a way of helping nonprofits preserve services in low-income communities.
